5. Tips to your guide and driver through the tour

Although Tibet is covered by ice and snow in winter,it is still a good season to visit. The average temperature of Tibet in winter is about 12 degrees Celsius and can be even higher in the daytime because of intensive sunlight.

During winter, roads might be blocked by heavy snow in east Tibet and Ngari and the road to travel to Lhasa, Tsedang, Gyanstse, Shigatse Mt.Everest Base Camp or to Nepal by overland are not affected very much. Acutally from late of Dec. to early Jan is the good time to see the Mt.Everest, with clean sky, bright sunshine, you will have great chances to see the true face of Mt.Everest, also the peculiar phenomenon of Mt.Everest Flag Cloud.

Compared with in summer, it is wiser to travel in Tibet in winter to some extent. Advantageous aspects stand to reasons on sufficient time, less tourists and adequate choices of accommodation. The train into and out of Lhasa is much easier to get than in summer, and there is discount for the flight. The cost of the vehicle, tour guide and accommodation are much lower. Undoubtedly, more economical tour expense is the largest superiority.

Barkhor Street is the oldest street in Lhasa located in the old area of Lhasa City, around the Jokhang Temple. This is the central place in Tibet for culture, religion, arts and the economy. It’s said that in 647A.D., the first Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo built the Jokhang Temple. Due to its magnificence, it quickly attracted thousands of Buddhist pilgrims. As a result, a trodden path appeared. That is the origin of Barkhor Street. The street was paved by hand-polished stone boards. For tourists, Barkhor Street is a wonderful place showing the original outlook of Lhasa. Tibetans also come to the area often to pray and have been coming to this area for centuries.
Many pilgrims enter the area walking by body-lengths along the street clockwise. The way they express their piety could make you understand the holiness of religion. In the street, there is a bazaar like atmosphere with several stalls set up selling all sorts of artifacts, food and clothes. Traders come here from all over the region to sell their things and try to make a decent living. This is the best bazaar in the country and one can find anything Tibetan that one desires.

What is Acute Mountain Sickness?
Acute Mountain Sickness is an illness that can affect mountain climbers, hikers, skiers or travelers who climb too fast. It usually occurs when people rapidly reach a high altitude (typically above 8,000 feet or 2,400 meters). Due to the decreasing availability of oxygen, it is very common to occur at high altitudes. Since most places in Tibet are higher than 3000 meters, most people will experience one or more AMS symptoms upon their arrival in Tibet, including headache, nausea, dizziness, fatigue, shortness of breath, loss of appetite and disturbed sleep. But the symptoms will usually gradually decrease in severity through acclimatization. Mild AMS usually will not interfere with mild activity.
Who can’t go?
(A) If you have problems like anemia or hypertension, or suffer from severe heart problems and other illness of lungs, liver or kidney, you should not go to Tibet.
(B) If you have respiratory problems, we advise you to postpone your trip till you are fully recovered.
How to get used to the environment of plateau?
Not everyone is physically suitable for staying at some place with average 4, 000 meters elevation for several days or even longer, although Tibetan are very hospitable. So it is necessary to have a physical examination before you enter Tibet. Or you can pick up some place with lower elevation to travel. That will be safe and responsible. The following ways may help to prevent or lessen the effects of AMS:
(A) Avoid catching cold before you entering Tibet. If you travel the plateau for your first time, you get ready to experience first. The more you are nervous, the more you tend to emerge the plateau reaction.
(B) Don’t do strenuous exercises and only take slight activities immediately after your arrival. Don’t climb too fast and don’t take too much luggage.
(C) Drink extra fluids and eat more vegetable and fruit when entering Tibet. Since the mountain air is dry and cold, it is necessary to drink enough water to prevent dehydration.
(D) Avoid alcohol as it may increase the risk of dehydration. Don’t smoke and don’t take other depressants such as tranquilizers and sleeping pills, because these medicines will depress the respiratory drive and limit oxygen intake.
