Morning visit: The first day sightseeing begins with Lhasa ’s cardinal landmark- Potala Palace , a structure of massive portions. Its towering image already appearing on various occasions, but your first sight of the Potala will still be an awe-inspiring moment. It takes at least a good 2-hour to visit those rooms, halls and chapels.

Afternoon visit: Some 2km to the east of the Potala is the most revered religious structure in Tibet- Jokhang Temple . Bustling with worshippers and redolent with mystery, the Jokhang is an unrivalled experience. The quadrangle of streets surrounding the Jokhang is the Barkhor – Lhasa’s most interesting pilgrimage circuit. This area of the Old Town is both the spiritual heart of Lhasa and the main commercial district for Tibetans.

Day 3 Lhasa

Today we are going to visit Drepung Monastery and Sera Monastery.

About 8km west of central Lhasa is the Drepung , once world’s largest monastery with about 10,000 monks. This day’s sightseeing begins with these white monastic buildings piled up on the hillside. Walking up to the hill is a pleasant thing, an easy break from the solemn ambience inside the halls and chapels. At the plat roof of hillside, you can have very good views of the whole Lhasa city and the distant mountains.

Drepung is one of Lhasa ’s two great Gelugpa monasteries, the other is Sera . Around 5km north of central Lhasa , Sera may not be as grandiose as Drepung, but is more serene surrounded by many small temples. The ‘Buddhism Scriptures Debating’ in Sera is very famous.

Day4.Lhasa- Basum Lake ( Draksum Tso)-Bayi

The Basum Lake (also called Basum co or Cuogao) is one of Tibet ’s most famous scenic spots. It lies in the Gongbo’gyamda County, at about 90 kilometers away from the county seat Gorlingka and 120 kilometers away from the Bayi town. In 1997, the World Tourism Ornanization listed the lake into its international tourist spots. In 2001, the State Tourism Administration granted five Tibetan tourism sites with the 4A title, Basum co was the only tourism region. In 2002, it became a State forest park .

The lake is an alpine lake at the mid-upper reaches of the Bar River . Largest tributary of the Nyang River . The lake situates at 3538 metres above sea level and covers 25.9 square kilometers with a length of 18 kilomters and an average breath of 1.5 kilometers, the deepest point of the lake is about 60 metres.Basum Co is dotted with a small island which shaped like a sheep back. The island bears abrasions left by glaciers moving on the way. As the origin of the Basum co. Valley sit at the fountainlead of rivers that converge into the lake.

Day5.Bayi-Pailung

Drive to Pailung. Preparations for trekking

Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon :At 95 degrees east longitude and 29 degrees north latitude on the border between Mainling and Medog counties. The Namjagbarwa peak, highest peak on the eastern range of the Himalayas, stands on the way of the Yarlung Zangbo River and forces it to make a U turn abruptly. To the south of the 7782-metre Namjagbarwa Peak stands the 7151 metre Gyailhabelai Peak . On the northern bank of the Yarlung Zangbo river , the top of Gyailhabelai is some 5000-6000meters tall er than the river valley . the two mountain giants stand shoulder by shoulder, with vertical cliffs guarding the river like enormous gates. The narrowest point at the river valley is less than 80 metres. It seems that some prehistoric giant had cut open the mountains to let out the surging river.

In 1994, Chinese scientists carried out an extensive survery in the great canyon. With comprehensive findings, they proved that this is the world’s biggest canyon. According to the statistics issued by the State Survey Bureau the canyon starts from the Daduka village (2880 metres above sea level of the Mainling County in the morth. And ends at the Bacoka village(115 metres above sea level) of the medog County . With a total length of 504.6 kilometres, the canyon is 6009 metres at the deepest point, with an average depth of 2268 metres. These figures provide indisputable evidence that this is the biggest canyon in the world. In the past the Grand Canyon of Colorado(1800-meter deep, 440-kilometer long)in the United States ,and the Colca Canyon in Peru (3203-metre deep )had been listed as the world’s biggest canyons. But neither of them can compare with the canyon on the Yarlung Zangbo river. The discovery excited the whole world and international scientists called it the most important geological find of the 20 th century. This discovery was made after long-term efforts by generations of Chinese Scientists. In September 1998. the State Council of the People’s Republic of China formally authorized the Scientific name of the Canyon:Yarlung Zangbo Grand Canyon( or the Yarlung Zangbo Daxiagu)

A pious pilgrim is solemnly holding  his hands high over his head, ready for another full prayer prostration.

Lhasa-based Tibet Airlines, which obtained the approval of the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) in March 2010, has signed a commitment to acquire three Airbus A319s.

The aircraft will be able to accommodate 128 passengers in a two-class configuration, with eight first class seats. The carrier plans to operate the A319s both on routes within the region and to major destinations across China.

High mountains make it extremely difficult to develop road traffic on the Tibetan plateau which is around 4000 meters in altitude on average. This makes it more efficient to travel by air in Tibet.

“Air traffic will play a key role in the social and economic development of the Tibet Autonomous Region,” said Liu Yanping, General Manager of Tibet Airlines. “The proven high altitude flight performance of Airbus A319 was key in our intent to start our operations with this aircraft. In anticipation of the growing demand for air transport in the region, we are planning to expand our fleet to some 20 aircraft in the next five years.”

“The high altitude performance of the Airbus A319 which has been proven by more than six years of commercial operations in and out of Lhasa and the RNP [Required Navigation Performance] validation in 2007 makes the aircraft an ideal and natural choice for Tibet Airlines. We wish Tibet Airlines a prosperous future with our world’s leading aircraft,” said John Leahy, Chief Operating Officer, Customers.

Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR) of People’s Republic of China has achieved a tremendous development within a short span of time after the democratic reform in 1959, said Pramod Dahal, press advisor for Nepali Minister of Information and Communication, in a recent interview with Xinhua.

Dahal made his first visit to TAR on Aug. 8-12 heading an eight- member delegation of local Nepali journalists. According to him, Tibetan people’s life is getting better and they are enjoying both political and religious freedom with the due course of time.

“After the democratic reform, China’s TAR has implemented an economic development strategy of promoting the production level of the primary industry, attaching importance to key sectors of the secondary industry, and vigorously developing the tertiary industry. Thus, TAR has witnessed sound and rapid economic development, the quality of life there has improved significantly, and new achievements were made in all social undertakings,” said Dahal.

“The democratic reform implemented in Tibet in 1959 abolished the theocratic feudal serfdom in Tibet and opened a new chapter in the history of Tibetan people.

“We visited many places in TAR including counties, urban cities and famous monasteries, we also talked to local people — businessmen, entrepreneurs, farmers, among others, and all are satisfied with the local government and its policy of uplifting people’s living standard as well as development.

“During our visit, we interview local people especially farmers they said that their life has been easier and happy after the emancipation of serfdom in Tibet. TAR government these days encourages and provides incentives to farmer.”

During the five-day visit, Dahal and other Nepali journalists met various senior officials including Vice-President of TAR, Deputy Director of Environment Protection Department of TAR, Director of Information Office of TAR, among others during their five days visit.

“This visit has an important meaning for Nepali journalists to figure out the fact about Tibet. I would like to express heartfelt gratitude to TAR government for providing us such an opportunity which has increased people-to-people understanding,”said Dahal.

He further stressed Nepali media always follow its government ‘ s policy of “One China” policy. “We believe TAR is an inalienable part of China which has witnessed rapid development in short time period,” Dahal said.

High up on the Tibetan Plateau, Tibet is a remote and fascinating country to visit. Southern Tibet is blocked off by towering Himalayan peaks, including Mount Everest or as the Tibetans call it, Qomolongma. But these rugged snow-capped mountains and green valleys are only a small part of what makes Tibet so special – another part is the Tibet’s devout Buddhism. Everywhere, you’ll see prayer flags, monasteries and temples honouring the Buddhist Gods and praying pilgrims en route to Lhasa. Here are a few Tibet travel tips to help you get started with your travel plans.

Lhasa – Tibet’s holy city lies at 3600m above sea level, so you’ll need some time to acclimatise. Not only will you find the Potala Palace in Lhasa, you can also visit the Buddhist Jokhang Temple, the spiritual heart of Tibet. You can also visit the Drepung and Sera monasteries which are schools for Tibetan apprentice monks. Just 35km outside Lhasa you’ll find the famous clifftop Ganden Monastery.

Friendship Highway to Everest Base Camp – This prayer flag lined road runs from Lhasa to Kathmandu in Nepal. Along the way to Everest Base Camp, you’ll pass the beautiful blue lake of Yamdrok-Tso, the trading town of Gyantse and Shigatse, Tibet’s second largest city. You’ll also see Sakya, home to one of Tibet’s largest and most colourful monasteries. After a trip to Everest Base Camp, you’ll stay in Lao Tingri (also known as Old Tingri); a small Tibetan village with narrow streets and white-lime houses before continuing to Nepal.

Nam Tso – Tibetan for ‘Heavenly Lake’, Nam Tso is a turquoise salt lake at an altitude of 4730m. In the heart of Northern Tibet’s wilderness, this lake is home to Nomadic Tibetans, with meditation caves and a pilgrim’s route running across the Changtang plateau.

When to go…

Tibetan winters are sunny and dry, but also extremely cold. That’s why we don’t recommend travelling to Tibet during the mid-winter months. Chances are that the roads will be covered with snow and there’s also a significant chance that mountain passes will be shut down.

We soon realized why the national Chinese residents did not use the dining car facilities. They either had brought their own food or purchased from the cart that went along the hallway. Elva and I went in for breakfast and sat for a least 15 minutes waiting for one of the attendants to come to our table. We asked a British couple if the serving was still in progress? They said they hoped so, but they had been waiting even long for service. Presently the lady got up from where she was seated at a table near the kitchen window and brought a menu to our table and “flopped” it on the table and walked away.

Though an attempt had been made to print the item names in English, their wording made it uncertain what one might get from ordering a specific items. We both ordered what we thought would be scrambled eggs, bacon and toast. We received a cold egg, a spoon full of rice and dry bread. We were more than glad that we had also brought some candy and snacks for the trip. With so many different nationalities using the train it would seem that a picture type menu like McDonalds uses through out China would be beneficial on the train. We had to return for some lunch and the results in the dining car were about the same. We just went without for dinner and picked up some more snacks near the hotel.

Every one of the personnel on the train we felt certainly could have used some training time in one of the large city hotels where a smile, a “good morning” and a helpful manner is abundant. It would be a total shame to have these trains become so notorious for indifferent and bad service that they are not appealing to foreign tourists.

Of further note — for dinner in Lhasa we sat at a large table with a couple from Australia, a couple from Britain and two young ladies from the U.S. who had all wanted to ride the train. One couple had been told it was impossible to obtain train tickets. Another waited for two days in Beijing to try and obtain tickets and the ladies from the U.S. were told by there agent that tickets could not be obtained. Something is totally wrong with this picture. You and I know that the number of trains a day operating to Lhasa are not all full. The train we were on was vacant compartments and seats in the chair cars available. The four trains we viewed going north towards Glommed during the day, none of the cars appeared to be full. Mostly they appeared to be totally empty. There is obviously a total lack of marketing for the seats on the trains leaving Lhasa and none of the people at the table we spoke with about the trains knew that there were train to Lhasa from other cities beside Beijing and none knew about boarding the train in Xining. To a person, they were totally surprised that we had arrived in Lhasa by train. All we could say was that we had a superior travel person looking after our requests. We told them they should have used CCT for their China tours.

The last deficient item I believe you should know about concerns the oxygen on the train. The web site, the initial advertisements stress the fact that oxygen supply nose tubes were available for all passengers. On our trip we did not see a single such oxygen supply devise of any type. The cabin attendant came in an opened the outlet door on the wall and turned on a valve and pointed to the oxygen outlet. We kept the compartment door closed and there seemed to be sufficient oxygen for us. WE live at a higher altitude than most here in Colorado and are not generally bothered by altitudes. However, I am positive there are many older persons and those with poor lung functions that should have had the nose tubes for the two hours or so the oxygen was in use. This lack of proper oxygen supply could be very critical to many persons.

Yes, we would recommend to any one interested, that the Tibet tours by train is well worth the trials, inefficiencies and problems, but a trip that should not be missed. We can only hope that someone will take an interest to improving the problems with these train trips next years give the experience a total black eye to this aspect of China tourism.

For a tour from Lhasa to Mount Everest Base Camp, we usually have two options for returning at the end – one is to get back to Lhasa and another one is to drive further to Kathmandu through the border town of Zhangmu between China and Nepal.

When planning such a trip, we first shall leave 2 to 3 days in Lhasa, not only for sightseeing there but also for high altitude acclimatization. Most people will not have any problem with the high altitude after some rest. During sightseeing in Lhasa, we should at least include the most beautiful splendor in Tibet – Potala Palace and the Tibetan spiritual center of Jokhang Temple. If the time permits, we usually shall have one day exploration to the Drepung Monastery and Sera Monastery to get a glimpse of how Tibetan monks live or study there. Then we will drive out of Lhasa for other places of the route.

As part of the road to Gyantse is under reconstruction now, our next stop would be Shigatse, the second largest city in Tibet. There is the Tashilumpo Monastery which stores the biggest copper Buddha statue in the world. The old town of Shigatse is also very interesting just like that of Lhasa. You may find some special souvenirs in the local market as well.

The next day we can either drive to Gyantse for a visit (approx. 180km back and forth) or skip Gyantse and drive forward to Ronbuk Monastery. The Shigatse-Ronbuk is a long trip of around 350km with the most difficult part in the last 100km. Ronbuk Monastery is the highest monastery in the world and only 8km from the Mt. Everest Base Camp. Upon arrival, we would be able to enjoy the glorious evening scenery of Mount Everest in distance. Overnight we usually stay at the Ronbuk Monastery guesthouse.

And in the next early morning, we will walk or take a carriage forward to the Mount Everest Base Camp.As we know there is very limited time to view the true face of Mount Everest in a year, many people feel it is already an unforgettable experience when just being with this highest mountain in the world..After enjoy the morning scenery of Mount Everest, we will get back to Tingri or forward to Shigatse depending on our last stop to Zhangmu or Lhasa. .

This Mount Everest Base Camp tour requires at least 7-8 days including that for high altitude acclimatization in Lhasa. The prime time for it shall be from May to October though it is available throughout the year except some snowing days in February (and raining days in August for the Friendship Highway to Kathmandu). Some tourists told us that they feel they changed to another person after the trip. I guess this might be because they experienced something really very unique in life.
