Beginning at Lukla, in the heart of the Khumbu region, this trek proceeds north up the Dudh Kosi Valley to Mache Bazaar, the major trading centre of the region. From Namche the trail follows the Imja Khola, with marvellous views on the way of Khumbu Himal, Thamserku and Kanteg with Amadablam in the distance and Everest and Lhotse dominating the skyline ahead. Trekking on upwards we eventually emerge above the tree-line before Dingboche.

Dingboche to Kalapatthar takes a further two days via the lateral moraine of the Everest glacier for a spectacular confrontation with the towering forms of Everest, Nuptse and Lhotse above.

From the Everest Base Camp we retrace to Lobuche and begin trekking westwards to the Gokyo Lake region via Cho-Lla pass. The relatively untravelled Gokyo Valley trail is dominated at its head by the overwhelming form of Cho Oyu (8153 m). From Gokyo, we ascend to Gokyo Ri, sometimes described as Nepal’s ultimate viewpoint, commanding awe-inspiring views of the vast Ngozumpa Glacier, Cho Oya with its neighbour Gyachung Kang, Mt. Everest rising above a fluted ridge, Lhotse and Makalu.

We head out westwards to Renjo-La pass and after crossing here we trek to Thame village, which was the home of the young Tenzing Norgay, Everest’s famous pioneer Sherpa, eventually retracing to Lukla via the main trail.
