Qungda, Potala Palace's new guardian, is seen in this picture taken on April 26, 2011. [Photo/Xinhua]

Five months after being appointed chief administration officer of the Potala Palace in Tibet, Qungda still feels the heavy weight of responsibility.

“It is such a grand duty,” said Qungda, who replaced the previous chief officer Champa Kelsang after the latter retired due to old age last December.

“The palace, a construction miracle, is not only a treasure of our Tibetan people but the whole world,” he said.

Qungda, 60, well understands the fragility of this ancient stone-and-wooden structure, built in the 7th century.

From 1965 to 1985, Qungda served in the fire control department of Lhasa and fought a serious fire in one of the chapels of the palace in 1984, the fourth fire in the palace’s history.

Firemen, monks and civilians in the neighborhood put out the fire within three hours, stopping it from spreading to the rest of the building.

The blaze destroyed half of a valuable Buddhist sutra manuscript. It took five years to restore the chapel.

“The day after the accident, a team of 10 firemen were posted inside the palace and I was appointed the leader,” Qungda said.

The first thing he did after working in the Potala Palace was explore every corner of the labyrinth palace, so to get a full picture of its layout and risks.

The Potala Palace has had no fire since.

In 1985, Qungda left the fire control department to work in the palace’s security department.

In 1988 he was appointed vice chief of the palace’s administration and remained in the role till his recent promotion.

Born into a farmer’s family in Lhasa, Qungda had been attracted by the Potala Palace since he was a child.

“It looked very solemn and sacred from outside and I was always wondering what it would be like inside,” he said.

The Potala Palace remained the residence of the Dalai Lamas till 1959.

In 1975, Qungda first entered the Potala Palace as a fireman taking part in a fire control exercise.

“It never occurred to me that I would work inside it for more than 20 years,” he said.

During these years, Qungda witnessed two large-scale restorations of palace’s interior, in 1989 and 2002 respectively.

The latest restoration ended in 2009.

“It made me feel a little bit relaxed as the latest restoration eliminated most of the risks in the framework and facilities,” he said.

In 2003, the palace administration limited the number of visitors to 2,300 per day, which has helped protect the grand old structure.

However, Qungda remains cautious. No matter how cold it gets, staff are not allowed to use electric heaters as they are a safety risk, he said.

His son Norsang Nyandrak is following in his father’s footsteps, working as a fireman inside the palace.

“I am glad he understands the importance of his work and enjoys it,” Qungda said.

Qungda always said he would devote the rest of his life protecting the Potala Palace.

Owing 37 manor houses, 12 farms and more than 3,000 serfs, the Tibetan noble family who lived in the Phalha Manor 60 years ago led an extravagant life, drinking French wine and smoking Indian cigarettes.

However, things have changed since the peaceful liberation of Tibet in 1951. The serfs who once accounted for more than 80 percent of the Tibetan population were emancipated in that year.

Located in Paljor Lhunpo Village, Gyangze County in Xigaze Prefecture, the Phalha Manor is the best-preserved Qing Dynasty manor in Tibet.

It was originally owned by the Phalha family, many of whom were senior officials in the Kashag governing council of Tibet during the Qing Dynasty and Republic of China.

Now the manor has been developed into a tourist attraction.

The 82-room manor has 5,000 square meters of grounds.

A guide named Drolma said the manor had a prison where serfs were kept. Bloodstains could still be seen on abandoned torture instruments.

“Tibetan nobles were drunk everyday and whipped their serfs for fun,” sighed Zhang Xuefeng, a tourist visiting the manor, “It is sad to imagine the hardships those serfs had to suffer.”

Migmar Dondrup, an old man in his seventies, was once a serf. “I had to work without food and suffer from the lashes,” he recalled with tears in his eyes.

Sixty years ago, Migmar Dondrup with his parents and wife were all kept as serfs in the Phalha Manor living in a shelter measuring merely 6.5 square meters. The only possession they owned was some broken bowls.

In contrast, Migmar and his family lived in a two-story Tibetan style building with an area of more than 400 square meters. They now have a farmland of 2 hectares yielding about 10,000 kilograms of grain per year.

They also raise many cattle from which they can make 50,000 yuan (7738 U.S. dollars) each year.

“Those unbearable memories have gone with the time,” Migmar Dondrup said with a smile and made a cup of buttered tea for himself.

Only the colorful prayer flags are still waving on the roof of the Phalha Manor like before.

The Namtso or Nam Co Lake is located in the Tibet Autonomous Region of China. With an elevation of 4,718 m and a surface area of approximately 1,920 sqkm, Nam Co is the biggest lake in the Tibet Autonomous Region and also the second largest salt lake in China. As was written in some historical documents, the lake is as blue as the sky, thus the lake is also called Tian Lake (literally, Sky Lake).

Nam Co is a world of blue. Those who live in Nam Co have the largest vocabulary of blue, just like the Inuit people have hundreds of words for different snows. Navy blue, midnight blue, powder blue, pearl blue, tile blue, gray blue …the blues one can see in Nam Co will definitely go beyond a normal vocabulary. There will always be a new kind of blue that one has never seen or even imagined.

There are many tourist attractions in Nam Co, among which the most popular three are: Ying Bin Stone, He Zhang Stone or Fu Mu Stone (literally Parents Stone) and Shan E Cave. Ying Bin Stone is the place where businessmen pray for good fortune; He Zhang Stone is where great love can be remembered and Shan E Cave (literally the Good and the Evil Cave) was where good once fought evil. An ancient tale says about the Shan E Cave that only good doers can pass through the cave.

Tips:

When to go: The rainy season of Nam Co from June to September is the best and almost the only time to visit Nam Co, since in October and November, the roads there will be blocked by heavy snow.

How to go: The Lhasa-Nam Co road was completed in the year 2006, so the buses offered by local travel agencies are now the most convenient choice.

If you are planning a trip to China, you will start on a journey into one of the most exciting counties in the world. With a land area of over 3.69 million square miles and a population of more than first 2 billion people, China is undoubtedly the epitome of paradox, mystery and adventure. China is a country of contrasts, with primitive villages, picturesque scenery and glitter, backgrounds immense wealth of the city new wealthy middle class and rich. Tourism has come with the new economic climate, hotels, restaurants and restored historic sites were blooming abundantly. But to travel in China will be overwhelming, to overcome the language as the most difficult hurdle. You are advised to ask themselves with basic Chinese words for food and beverages, hotels and restaurants, shopping for necessities to be aware of, and for directions and hours. It is much easier to move and to lead to greater interaction with the Chinese people. If you are the type that are taken away from the bustle of towns and hiking and backpacking, then China is the ultimate destination for trekking. I’ve listed three favorites. The Great Wall: Jinshanling to Simatai Location: in the province of Hebei Hiking time: 4:00 – 5:00 The rugged six mile (10 km) lies between -55 Jinshanling and Simatai miles (89 kilometers) northeast of Beijing, is a good start. Taxis in Beijing are arranged just two pages (about $ 60. USD round trip). Plan on at least four hours: the path is rocky and steep. Other well-preserved and accessible parts of the wall are Huanghuacheng and Mutianyu, north of Beijing. For thirsty travelers, Hebei Province has no limitations in walking wall, but almost no infrastructure for hikers. Most Chinese tourists take the zip line Simatai ($ 4), or the head of the reconstructed section of the Wall at Badaling ($ 6). For one afternoon. You can be violent crowd and providers face, but it is certainly the best way to see the wall. Starting in the small village of Jinshanling and Simatai ends, walking is an intense pace of the ascent and descent of the road together. Some routes have fallen, with crumbling walls and steps, and thus improves the feeling of walking on the ruins, which are more than 2,000 years. During this walk you will probably meet the local farmers sell water, beer and tourist trinkets. The hike is a strenuous climb of steps from top to bottom. For the adjustment, the increase of 10 kilometers can take less than three hours. Getting Started It is possible to reach by public bus, but are more easily organized by a travel agency. The tickets are usually a minibus from Beijing to Jinshanling, entrance fees and a minibus back to Beijing Simatai. Input Two tickets are required. At the end of the walk is crossing it, a fee of five yuan for a bridge, is the ticket Tyrolean another 60 RMB. Tower “A” should receive from a travel agency cost 90 RMB. Be aware that an additional 30 RMB for the second ticket is required separately by you to the wall. Accommodation It is possible to spend the night on the wall if you have the right equipment. Otherwise, most people visit the Great Wall in Beijing one day. Living in small villages near the wall can be hard to find. Food There are local selling water, soda, beer and kebabs and noodles. At the end of the hike in Simatai, there is a restaurant near the parking lot. Tiger Leaping Gorge Location: North Yunnan Province Hiking time: 2 days Tiger Leaping Gorge is one of the deepest gorges in the world and a spectacular miracle. Mountains, forests, meadows, vertical rock walls and villages with terraced fields await you. Houses built with stacked slate, wood-frame and on the roofs, to give you the feeling of stepping back into another time. Far below the trail that is along the Haba mountains, you the Jinsha Jiang (also known as the Yangtze in other parts of China), which cuts into the throat to see 16 km and crosses the steep flanks of the mountain peaks, passing more than 19,000 feet in the clouds. Most people take two days to walk along the 9-12 hours completed Tiger Leaping Gorge, staying overnight in one of the many huts in the villages. Getting Started Tiger Leaping Gorge is located north of Lijiang, located several hours by bus (20 RMB). The trail begins near the small town Qiatou. At the end of the walk, back to Qiatou is another 20 RMB. From there you can take a bus back to Lijiang. Input Admission: 30 RMB Accommodation Most people increase the length (16 km) from the Tiger Leaping Gorge in two days, starting in the early morning hours of Qiatou on “Day One” and overnight in a guest house in a village on trail. The rooms are simple, and will cost around 30 RMB. Accommodation Qiatou can be found at the Tiger Leaping Packed Cafe, which offers a kitchen dorm room, luggage room, and much information. At the end of the course is Sean Guest House in Walnut Grove, a place popular with many hikers. Food In Qiatou, the tiger jumps packed cafe offers homemade food. There are restaurants in the huts in the villages, and water and snacks can also be purchased. Outside the towns there are no facilities along the route. Emei Shan Location: south of Sichuan Province Duration: 3 days One of China’s four sacred mountains of Buddhism, Emei Shan, with temples and monasteries still inhabited by monks and nuns dotted. It is a place of pilgrimage for followers of Buddhism, and how you go, you think you climb the long staircase to the floor. On the summit of Mount Emei, you are to stand above the clouds at a height of over 9,800 feet, as on the Golden Temple Trek. It is easy to see why the Buddhist Emei Shan chose pilgrimage. It is not just a test of physical endurance, but a test of spirit and good. The Buddhist religion is based on the premise that life is suffering established, and stair climbing Emei is strenuous enough to make you a believer. Hikers can travel to the summit and back in three days, spend the night in one of the monasteries in the mountains, and the second day, the Golden Temple. The third day is a walk or bus ride down the mountain. You can also consider one of several mountain railways on Mount Emei are.
